Down in the infirmary, I wanted to ask Isolde about the Eye, but Evie never left the room. I suppose I still could have asked, but Evie wasn’t hating me at the moment—she even called me by name and not rookie, newbie, or dumb-ass—and I kinda wanted to keep it that way for as long as I could.

So I decided to take the book back to my room to read up on the charm when everyone else had gone to sleep, but by the time we got back upstairs, the table had been cleared for dinner and the book was gone. Damn it. That left Plan B, my good pal Google. But, as I’d suspected, I had no such luck searching for the Eye of Serendipity or anything like it. Double damn.

I had one more shot: try to corner Tess, Isolde, or even Alex alone before I had to go down into Evelyn’s shop for marking. Again, nothing. Everyone seemed to be moving in groups, and I couldn’t catch any one of the three of them alone. At least I was nearly healed. It was only two days after the incident with the Limaske demon, and the puncture wounds had diminished to three round, pink scars. I didn’t even need a bandage on them anymore.

After sucking down a hearty breakfast, I wandered down the hall into Evie’s back room. She was standing at the counter, mixing ink and preparing for the session. Her hair was braided again, but I could still see the edges of the tattoo peeking out from either side of it.

I saw the tracing paper on the chair and picked it up to take a look at what I was in for.

“These are just going to be outlines,” she said. “I can go back over them later and make them into a nice, cohesive back piece with the work you already have there if you want.”

Ha, IF I want? If it meant long hours in close proximity with Evelyn, I seriously wanted.

“That’s cool. So, what are these anyway?”

“The one with the two birds around the compass is for protection, and the trees around the swirly triangle thing is for healing. Both of these are standard and will do wonders in a nasty fight,” she explained, filling a cap full of what looked to be deep purple ink. “Have a seat.”

The armrests of the tattoo chair had been taken off and pieces removed from either side of the back to make it easier for me to straddle and lean forward while she worked. After prepping the area and getting the transfers on just right, Evie began.

The needle burned, and that ink stung like a son of a bitch, more than normal. But the music that she always played and the endless grilling of my demon knowledge helped to take my mind off the pain. Kinda. Okay, not really, but it did help me keep my focus on the job and not the swirls of ink under her braid or the feeling of her hot, gloved palms splayed across my back.
